Girls Aloud are a British girl group created by TV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. The group, consisting of Cheryl Cole [nee Tweedy], Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, has become one of the most successful British pop groups of the decade, with a record-breaking sixteen consecutive Top 10 singles [including three number ones], four platinum albums [including a number one] and record sales in excess of 4.2 million in the UK. They are Smash Hits Poll Winners, have won a TMF Award and have been nominated for a BRIT Award. Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one in the UK Charts [with their platinum-selling debut single 'Sound of the Underground'], and have since become one of the few reality television groups to have had continued success. Guinness World Records list them as the Most Successful Reality TV Group in the 2007 edition, and also the Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group in the 2008 edition. For a contemporary pop group manufactured on reality television they have received unprecedented praise from broadsheet newspapers and the rock music press.
'The Loving Kind' is the twentieth single by British pop group Girls Aloud, and the second single to be taken from their fifth studio album, 'Out Of Control'. The song is co-written by the Pet Shop Boys, and was released on January 12th 2009. On December 14th 2008, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at No.88 on downloads alone. After its physical release on January 12th 2009, 'The Loving Kind' climbed into the top ten at No.10, becoming Girls Aloud's twentieth consecutive top-ten single.
The music video was directed by Trudy Bellinger. In the video, "the girls appear to be duplicated as they perform against a backdrop of multiple mirrors". The boxes are either coloured black, red, or white. The girls portray the "good" Girls Aloud, who are the lovable kind, and their "bad" alter egos, who are not. The bad Girls Aloud throw wine and smash the glass that covers their boxes. Pop music blog PopJustice noted that "twenty singles in, Girls Aloud have made their best video yet".
